MINIMALISM: What happens when you decide it's enough?
As someone who attempts to run a lifestyle blog, there are times that just...strike you as having enough. I love make-up for some unknown reason, probably having been inspired to paint and do so much with it. It felt like I could experiment, I could do so much. If there was one thing I wasn't a minimalist on, it was on eye shadow palettes. I currently own at least 11, and I would've probably continued...Until I just felt myself just not wanting to buy another one. This post isn't about downsizing, it's about that very strange feeling that comes when you feel you have enough. I also might do a proper review of these palettes
For context, my current collection sits at the following, those marked with an * are my current "mostly used", palettes I reach out on a daily basis, while those marked with a + are my collector's/only get out if there's a specific outfit or occasion and I will buy again. I didn't include those palettes that are going to the donation bin or the trash because they're expired.
1. L'Oreal La Palette Nude*
This is my go-to nude palette when I have work or need something subtle without going all in like the next few palettes. It's a basic nude eye shadow palette, pretty good pigmentation, doesn't cause a lot of fallout, it's just my workhorse of my regular palettes.
2. Maybelline Burgundy Bar Palette*
God, please don't let this one be a limited edition or I'll cry. It's got so many beautiful shades and the formula is pretty darn good for being a drugstore palette. Best Maybelline Palette I own, and I've been loving how well they blend together. It's my attempt at finding a Huda Beauty Rose Gold Palette and it's been working so well whenever I use it.
3. Urban Decay Born To Run *
This is the Palette that had prompted this thought, that I didn't need any other palette. This was a graduation gift from my mother, and it has so many interesting colors that I found myself not wanting to buy any other palettes. The formula's fantastic, I used it on my graduation day and keep coming back for just an extra pop of color. It even has a green color that doesn't look half bad! I'm still experimenting on it, what looks it can pull off, it's quite fascinating!
4. Wet 'N Wild Not a Basic Peach Palette*
You see me wearing this one? I probably went to the gym, this is my favorite portable palette to carry around in my make-up bag. Wet 'N Wild has a pretty consistent formula that works for a quick eye look, especially the shimmers and the metallic looks. Pretty good to have either a couple of nude eyes or with a splash of color like that teal color.
5. Maybelline The Blushed Nudes Palette +
We've now started the + part of my Collection, and this Palette is near and dear to my heart, even if it's obtained a controversial reputation due to the inconsistent formula. This palette right there was the palette that came with me during Hurricanes Irma and Maria. Before you judge, I have priorities, and making sure I at least looked put together when I returned to work after a Cat 5 Hurricane was one of them. I'm pretty close to hitting pan on a few of the colors, it's showing its age and I'll probably buy a new one soon enough. It's got softer colors than the Burgundy Bar, more subtle pinkish nudes than the L'Oreal and Urban Decay palettes
6. Maybelline The 24K Nudes Palette +
This one is a point of contention in the beauty community as the shimmers and the violet color are pretty inconsistent and patchy. This is the palette I go full ham "I'm a diva" mode. The mattes and the lighter colors apply well, but the violet shade requires some elbow grease to get it working without patchiness. It's a stunning palette that I use for dramatic moments (for the out there looks, I used to go to the Rock Nudes but...I have my issues with that one) or whenever I just feel like putting on some gold or violet in my eyes. Would probably buy again but not used in a lot of situations like the ones above.
There are at least 5 more palettes that I have but, as I stated with the Urban Decay palette, these are basically the ones that I feel happy owning and just not buying a new ones to the collection. The others may not be in my collection for long, as I simply grow out of those, and only purchase what I need. That feeling I mentioned before, it feels like completion. Like I don't have to search and collect. It's weird to consider mindfulness in something as consumerist as make-up but I've started to hit those points. I don't want to experiment, I want to adapt. I'm paying attention to what goes on my skin and what my wallet doles out, not just because the trends have spoken.
It's not an essential product, let's not beat around the bush, but every time I hold one of these palettes, I feel a little spark of joy, as taught by Marie Kondo in her book The Life Changing Magic Of Tidying Up.
It's a nice feeling, to find mindfulness in things you didn't expect them to be.
