HEALTH: The Importance of Breakfast: Dealing with Erratic Blood Sugar

I post this with the following disclaimer: I am in no way a medical or health professional and anything spoken here is merely the experiences I've encountered during the last few months. Nothing about this blog should be taken as advice.

So with that said, I was supposed to write this post yesterday but as it turns out, I had a really terrifying incident with my blood sugar levels, something I've been dealing for a while now.

Back in October, I was with my mom and little sister, getting fitted with a seamstress (who might I say is amazing) when I felt my head get hot. I told mom I was feeling hot and...I honestly don't remember what happened between that moment and opening my eyes to being offered a banana and some water. Mom and the seamstress both told me I'd gone extremely pale and the dress I had was soaked in sweat. That was my first encounter with my blood sugar problems. I began to feel better the moment I ate the fruit and drank the water. Ever since then, I began eating the three big meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) while adding three snack times in between.

Jump to this Tuesday and I made the cardinal mistake of leaving the house without breakfast. I was running very late, and I thought I'd be missing my case presentation. I assumed I'd make it in time to grab breakfast at law...I was dizzy throughout the discussion of the case and then I felt the inklings of the hot sensation along my head. Immediately, I rushed over to the cafeteria and grabbed a fruit salad, having remembered the last time it happened. I also had the sense to get moving to the campus medical services, knowing that if I needed a blood sugar test and something more, they could help.

The doctor on staff was kind but stern, stating that the earlier incident and this one were indications that my blood sugar tended to behave like someone who has hypoglycemia. This was unfortunately not as surprising as many in my family suffer from blood sugar related conditions. They told me to follow up with my main doctor, and to not just have snacks (preferably fruits as their sugars are simple and easy to break down) but to never leave home without breakfast.

No more rushing through the door just to beat morning traffic, I have to be mindful of the situation I'm in, resume my exercises and incorporate more fruits (and vegetables) in my life.

This was today's topic, I'll be trying a new posting calendar system, but the topics will be of whatever comes to mind.
